The Catch
Unless you are doing technical, translation or
transcription, there is not a lot of money in freelance online writing. You can
be paid by the hour or by the assignment and payment can run from $1 an article
to $7-10 per page for the very best, most experienced writers.
What You Spend
For the most part, you don’t pay fees to work at home as a writer. There are however some exceptions to this. If you use an employment agency to find you a work at home position as a technical writer you might have to pay a fee to the agency. On freelance sites you pay a very small percentage fee on each job. There are also some online sites and services that list at home jobs, and you have to pay a membership fee to accent this information.
The Advantage
If you are a good
writer then you can usually work at your own pace and when you choose to. If
you have 5 articles due to a client within 48 hours, it does not matter if you
work from 9-5 or from 2 am to 7 am. It is your choice.
The Way You Make Money
If you are an employee doing transcription, translation
or proofreading, you will receive your assignments from your employer. If you
are freelancing, you will choose what projects you apply for and if hired will
proceed with the project.
How & When You Get Paid
There are several ways that writers can make money
working from home and these include:
• Be an employee and receive salary or hourly pay. Usually your paycheck is deposited directly to your bank account. You might be full time at 40 hours or part time at 26-35 hours. As an employee you are paid when everyone else is paid – biweekly or once a month.
• Be an
independent contractor and be paid by the project or by the hour. Usually there
is a choice of online payment methods such as PayPal. You are usually paid within
a week of completely the project of for your hours on a weekly basis.
As an independent
contractor, the number of hours you work per week is up to you as long as there
is work available. You decide what you are charging for your work per hour.
However, if you set your price too high, you will not get a large number of
jobs.
