There are two types of transcription jobs-Medical and
everything else which could include law enforcement, general business, legal
and financial. Medical transcription is done from medical records while the
others are done from audio files. It is easier to find and attain the simple
transcription job than the medical one.
The Catch
For medical transcription training can be costly, and you usually have to work in-house with medical transcription before you can work at home. Trust has to be developed before the companies will let you work off site. On the other hand, simple transcription jobs can be found at online freelance sites, and you can work from home. Without training these jobs are hard to get.
What You Spend
Cost of training is usually about $1500. However it might be as little as $1000 or as much as $8000. Try to find a local community college or vocational school that offers this training. Be wary with online courses. Some online courses are great but others might be scams. You really need to be careful with this. The training can take from four months to two years. Textbooks might cost between $200 and $900.
The Advantage
These jobs are usually employee status, and they pay very well. If you can attain one of these jobs, it is much easier to make good money as a transcriptionist than in many of the other jobs we have talked about.
The Way You Make Money
By either taking files of documents and notes and
transcribing them into summaries or detailed documents as requested. Listen to
audio tapes and transcribing them into a typed document.
How & When You Get Paid
You could be paid by the document, by the hour or on
salary. However unlike almost any other jobs, medical transcriptionists are
paid by the line. They make between .03 -.13 per line. You will probably be
paid biweekly by direct deposit or it could be monthly.
