Merchandising is the practice of making products in retail outlets available to consumers, primarily by stocking shelves and displays. While this used to be done exclusively by the stores' employees, many retailers have found substantial savings in requiring it to be done by the manufacturer, vendor, or wholesaler that provides the products to the retail store.
The Catch
I guess I would have to say the catch is that you are pretty much on your own. They give you detailed instructions on how to do the setups or what ever it is that you are assigned to do, however once you get to the store there is no one there to help you. The store is their own company and the company you will be working for will not be the same.
What You Spend
Sometimes they ask that you bring your own supplies, in which case you would need to purchase them if you wanted to do that particular job. However most of what they ask for you to bring you more than likely have at home already.
The Advantage
You get to choose assignments, and you can usually pick the day and time you go (within a week.)
You have to go through a type of application process, then you will have the ability to search the companies website for shops in your area, you can pick and choose which shops you would like to perform, for instance you may have already planned on getting an oil change you sign up for the shop, you have to pay outright for the oil change but will be reimbursed for it plus the actual payment for the job at a later date. It is also important to note that there is no one website that has all the shops available, for instance while McDonalds may use this company, Lowes Theaters may use another, or Wendy's a different company.
How & When You Get Paid
Some companies send checks to your home, almost all offer the option of having the money electronically transferred to your account. It takes between 1-4 weeks depending on the company.
